At Vanajan, we’ve taken a big step forward in our climate journey. We’ve now officially calculated the greenhouse gas emissions for our company’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 – as part of our commitment to the Climate Program by Finland’s Chamber of Commerce for 2025.
Now we know more – and that means we can make better decisions.
What Does That Actually Mean?
In short: we now understand more precisely where our emissions come from, and where we have room to improve. Because you can’t reduce what you don’t measure.
What on Earth Is a “Scope”?
In climate work, emissions are typically divided into three categories: Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3. We’ve now focused on the first two:
- Scope 1 includes direct emissions from our own operations – such as fuel used in production or company vehicles.
- Scope 2, on the other hand, covers indirect emissions related to purchased energy. That means electricity or heating we use, even if it’s produced elsewhere.
Calculating these gives us a clear picture of the climate impact of everyday activities – like running machines, heating our facilities, or simply having the lights on.
So, What’s the Benefit?
Now that we have data, we can make decisions based on facts – not just gut feeling or assumptions.
It means we can start asking sharper questions, like:
- Which machines consume the most energy?
- Should we consider updating our lighting systems?
- Can we switch to more renewable energy sources?
We also know what we’re already doing well – and where we can improve even further.
This Is Just the Beginning
Calculating Scope 1 and 2 emissions is just the first step. Next, we’ll focus on Scope 3 emissions, which cover everything that happens outside our own factory walls:
Raw material sourcing, transportation, packaging and the rest of our supply chain.
We know that not everything changes overnight. But we also believe that every question, every insight, and every small decision moves us forward. Because real sustainability is built one choice at a time – consistently, and together.
